We see both on Elizabeth chimneys, especially the pre-war brick homes in the Elmora section where the original terracotta flue tiles take the 13″ x 13″ Ultra, and the newer construction near Kean University that more often carries the 9″ x 9″ standard. Check the underside of your existing cap for a stamped model prefix, usually “UL-” or “ST-” followed by the flue dimension. If the stamp’s rusted over, measure the flue tile itself, not the old cap, since a warped cap will lie to you.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Is Failing

• The lid sits tilted or wobbles in wind. Gelco caps use a four-point base clamp that loosens gradually as the crown sealant beneath it shrinks. Once the base loses contact, the whole assembly becomes a weather vane. We’ve pulled caps off Elizabeth chimneys that had been riding at a 15-degree angle for two winters.
• Rust streaks run down the chimney face below the cap. The 304 stainless steel mesh on standard Gelco caps holds up well, but the spot-welded corners collect salt and moisture, especially with Elizabeth’s proximity to the Arthur Kill and the heavier road-salt aerosol along Route 1&9. The rust you see is usually the mesh degrading, not the lid itself.
