Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Elizabeth Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Gelco-compatible chimney caps across Elizabeth, with most replacements running $340-$680 installed depending on flue size and whether your crown needs resealing. If you call us in the morning with your Gelco model number or flue dimensions, we can usually have the right cap on the truck and the job done by afternoon. Most Elizabeth homeowners discover their cap has failed after a storm blows it crooked, or when water starts showing up on the firebox floor after years of the cap sitting askew.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco caps fall into a few distinct series, and getting the match right matters more than you’d think. The Ultra series uses a heavier 24-gauge lid and a welded skirt, while the standard Gelco line runs 26-gauge with a snap-lock base. We see both on Elizabeth chimneys, especially the pre-war brick homes in the Elmora section where the original terracotta flue tiles take the 13″ x 13″ Ultra, and the newer construction near Kean University that more often carries the 9″ x 9″ standard. Check the underside of your existing cap for a stamped model prefix, usually “UL-” or “ST-” followed by the flue dimension. If the stamp’s rusted over, measure the flue tile itself, not the old cap, since a warped cap will lie to you.

We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco. We carry OEM Gelco caps and, when it makes sense, professional-grade aftermarket equivalents from Olympia Chimney and Copperfield that match the gauge and mesh spec exactly. The aftermarket route saves roughly $40-$80 on parts without cutting corners, and we always show you both options before ordering.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Is Failing

  • The lid sits tilted or wobbles in wind. Gelco caps use a four-point base clamp that loosens gradually as the crown sealant beneath it shrinks. Once the base loses contact, the whole assembly becomes a weather vane. We’ve pulled caps off Elizabeth chimneys that had been riding at a 15-degree angle for two winters.
  • Rust streaks run down the chimney face below the cap. The 304 stainless steel mesh on standard Gelco caps holds up well, but the spot-welded corners collect salt and moisture, especially with Elizabeth’s proximity to the Arthur Kill and the heavier road-salt aerosol along Route 1&9. The rust you see is usually the mesh degrading, not the lid itself.
  • Water pools on the smoke shelf or damper. A cap that looks fine from the ground can have a cracked or separated lid seam. Gelco’s welded Ultra lids rarely split, but the standard line’s seamed lids will open at the joint after 12-15 years of freeze-thaw.
  • Birds or squirrels are accessing the flue. The 5/8″ mesh on most Gelco caps is the right spec for keeping animals out, but when the mesh corrodes or pulls away from the frame, the gap is an invitation. We find nests in Elizabeth chimneys every March, usually in caps that lost mesh integrity two seasons prior.
  • The damper frame shows new rust. This is the delayed signal. Water has been entering for a while, past the cap and down the flue, and now it’s attacking the metal throat damper. By this point the cap failure has usually been active for a year or more.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Scope Price Range
Gelco standard cap, single flue, installed $340-$460
Gelco Ultra cap, single flue, installed $480-$620
Multi-flue Gelco cap, custom fit $580-$780
Crown resealing (when base is compromised) $180-$280 additional

The range depends on three things: cap series, flue accessibility from the roof, and whether the crown beneath the old cap has eroded. We do not install a new cap on a crumbling crown. The base needs a sound surface, so if the crown is spalled or cracked, we reseal with CrownCoat or rebuild as needed. Every installation includes new base sealant, stainless fasteners, and a photo of the finished work from the roof. The 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation in writing, no arguing. If it leaks, we come back.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s nothing inherently dangerous about swapping a chimney cap if you’re comfortable on a roof and have the right ladder setup. What goes wrong is the diagnosis underneath. An owner might bolt a new cap onto a crown that’s already cracked, or miss that the flue tile itself has shifted, or install the wrong base size and create a gap that funnels water straight in. We check the crown, the flue tile condition, and the mesh spec against your appliance type, all before the new cap goes on. If you do go up yourself, wear a harness on pitches over 4:12, and never work alone. Otherwise, call us at (908) 923-3159 and we’ll handle the ladder work and the judgment call underneath it.
