Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation: The Elizabeth Owner’s Guide

We install Copperfield-compatible chimney caps across Elizabeth, typically running $285 to $550 installed depending on flue size and whether your crown needs resealing underneath. Most jobs we book are completed in a single visit, and we stock the common 8″, 10″, and 13″ x 13″ Copperfield galvanized and stainless models on our trucks. Homeowners usually discover the problem after a storm - water on the firebox floor, a rust streak down the brick, or a cap sitting crooked after the wind shifted it off the flue.

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield caps fall into a few distinct series, and matching the right one matters more than you’d think. The 3000 Series is their standard galvanized line with a 24-gauge lid and 5/8″ mesh, built for single-flue masonry chimneys. The 5000 Series steps up to 304 stainless steel with a lifetime warranty on the metal itself. We also see the Multi-Flue models on larger Elizabeth homes, especially the wider cap-and-pan assemblies that cover multiple flues on a single crown.

To identify yours, check the stamp on the underside of the lid if it’s still readable, or measure the flue tile opening - not the outside of the chimney, but the inside dimensions of the terracotta flue itself. Copperfield’s standard singles run true to size: an 8″ x 8″ cap fits an 8″ x 8″ flue. Where owners get tripped up is the 8″ x 13″ and 10″ x 13″ rectangles, which look close enough to square until you try to seat them. We carry both OEM Copperfield and quality aftermarket equivalents from Gelco and Olympia Chimney. For most Elizabeth homes, the aftermarket matches the spec at a lower parts cost; we only push OEM when the existing mount hardware is proprietary and must mate exactly.

Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Rust streaks down the chimney face. Galvanized caps in the 3000 Series begin showing surface rust around year 7 to 10 in Elizabeth’s climate, faster if you’re within a few blocks of the waterfront where salt air accelerates corrosion. The rust runs down with rain and stains the brick below.
  • Water on the firebox floor after rain. This means the cap has shifted, the mesh has pulled away from the skirt, or the storm collar has cracked. Water finding its way past the cap runs straight down the flue and pools where you light your fires.
  • The cap sits crooked or rocks when touched. Wind lift is the usual cause, especially on caps installed with only friction-fit legs rather than masonry screws or a proper bead of sealant. Elizabeth’s nor’easters will test any shortcut installation.
  • Birds or squirrels audible in the flue. Copperfield’s 5/8″ mesh is spec’d to keep animals out, but if the mesh has corroded through at the welds or a corner has bent, you’ve got an entry point. We find starlings in flues every March.
  • Spalling brick on the chimney top. This is downstream damage from a cap that failed years ago. Water freezing in the brick overnight, expanding, popping the face off - it’s the most expensive symptom because now you’re repairing masonry, not just swapping a cap.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Range in Elizabeth
Single-flue galvanized cap, standard install $285 - $375
Single-flue stainless cap (304), standard install $395 - $495
Multi-flue cap-and-pan assembly $450 - $650
Crown resealing or minor masonry prep $125 - $250 additional

The range depends on three things: cap material, flue accessibility, and what we find when we pull the old unit. A straightforward swap on a single-story ranch with good roof pitch takes forty minutes. A steep slate roof on a three-story Peterstown row house with a rotted crown underneath takes longer and requires more material. We price it upfront before we start, and the number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. Every cap installation carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise - in writing, no arguing. If water gets past our work, we come back.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s nothing mysterious about a chimney cap, and a handy homeowner can certainly measure a flue and order the right part. What goes wrong is the install. You’re working at height, often on a roof pitch that wasn’t designed for standing. The cap needs to be centered over the flue, seated level, and secured so wind can’t lift it. We’ve found caps duct-taped in place, caps with screws driven into mortar that crumbled the following winter, caps installed upside-down so they funneled water straight in.

What you can safely check from inside: shine a flashlight up the flue and look for daylight around the cap edges, or water staining on the flue walls. What we handle: roof access, proper fall protection, crown condition assessment, and a camera inspection afterward to confirm the flue is clear and the cap is doing its job. The chimney doesn’t care what you paid for the house - it just needs to be clean and clear.
