DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Elizabeth Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible chimney caps across Elizabeth, with most replacement jobs running $280 to $520 installed depending on flue size and whether the existing crown needs attention. For standard DuraFlex 316Ti stainless liners in the 5.5-inch to 8-inch range, we typically have the cap on the truck and can complete the swap in a single visit. Homeowners usually discover the problem after a storm, when water spots appear on the ceiling near the fireplace, or when they notice rust streaks running down the brick from a cap that’s lost its mesh or blown clean off.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex caps are not one-size-fits-all, and ordering wrong is an expensive mistake. The critical match is between your liner’s inner diameter and the cap’s base collar, which must seat directly onto the DuraFlex 316Ti or 304 stainless liner without gaps or forced compression.

We most commonly see three configurations in Elizabeth homes: the standard round cap for 5.5-inch, 6-inch, and 8-inch liners; the ovalized cap for the 6.5-inch by 10-inch DuraFlex oval used in some pre-fab fireplace retrofits; and the specialized top-sealing damper cap for older installations where the original throat damper has corroded shut. The part number is stamped on the underside of most original caps, though after a few New Jersey winters that stamp can rust to illegibility. When that happens, we measure the liner ID with a caliper and match it to DuraFlex’s collar chart, not guess.

We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with DuraFlex. We source OEM DuraFlex caps when the job demands exact factory matching, particularly for oval liners where aftermarket tolerances can be loose. For standard round liners, we also carry Gelco and Olympia Chimney equivalents that meet the same 316Ti spec and carry equivalent wind ratings, usually at a lower parts cost we pass through directly. The decision depends on what your warranty or homeowner’s insurance requires, and we’ll tell you straight which makes sense.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Rust streaks down the brickwork. DuraFlex caps are 316Ti stainless, but the attachment hardware and the crown wash beneath it are often galvanized or plain steel. When the crown cracks, water wicks to that hardware, and the rust you see is actually the fastener bleeding through, not the cap itself. Left alone, the rust migrates into the liner collar and seizes it.
  • Mesh siding pulled away or missing entirely. The spark arrestor mesh on DuraFlex caps is 5/8-inch 304 stainless, but the spot welds at the corners fatigue after 10 to 15 years of thermal cycling. In Elizabeth’s freeze-thaw climate, that fatigue accelerates. Once mesh gaps exceed a half-inch, embers can escape, and local code considers it a failed installation.
  • Water in the firebox after rain. A properly seated DuraFlex cap sheds water outward through a built-in drip edge. If you’re seeing puddling, either the cap has shifted on its collar, the collar itself has separated from the liner, or the crown beneath has sunk enough to create a pooling surface that overtops the base.
  • Draft problems or smoke rollback on startup. DuraFlex caps include a minimum 5-inch clearance height above the flue opening to maintain draw. If the cap has been dented by falling ice or improper removal, that clearance shrinks and the flue can stall, particularly on shallow-pitch roofs common in the Peterstown section where wind patterns already complicate draft.
  • Visible gaps between cap base and crown. The base flange should sit flat on the crown with a bead of proper sealant. Gaps mean the crown has eroded, the cap was never properly seated, or freeze-thaw has lifted it. Any gap is a direct water path into the liner system and the chase below.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Elizabeth homeowners, a DuraFlex chimney cap replacement typically breaks down as follows:

Component Price Range
DuraFlex OEM cap (5.5″-6″ round) $140 - $195
DuraFlex OEM cap (8″ round or oval) $195 - $280
Gelco/Olympia equivalent (round only) $95 - $155
Labor: remove, inspect collar, install, seal $145 - $195
Crown wash repair (if needed) $85 - $165

The spread depends on roof pitch, accessibility, and whether we find collar corrosion that requires liner trimming or re-termination. We photograph the collar condition before quoting, so you see what we see. Every cap installation carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing, no arguing, if it’s not right, we come back. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

There is no high-tension danger in a chimney cap, but there is a real falling hazard. Most Elizabeth homes with DuraFlex liners were built with the chimney at ridge height or above, and the cap sits where the roof meets its steepest pitch. We have replaced caps that homeowners started to remove, then realized they were working one-handed while the other gripped the ladder.

What you can safely check from inside: shine a flashlight up the flue and confirm whether the liner collar is still visible and intact. If the collar is cracked or separated, that is not a cap problem, it is a liner termination problem, and it needs proper tools and a camera inspection to assess.

What goes wrong with DIY cap installation: over-tightening the collar clamp and deforming the liner, using silicone instead of high-temp sealant that fails in the first heating season, or installing a cap with insufficient mesh clearance that creates a new draft problem. We carry the right collar clamps, the right sealant, and we check draw with a draft gauge before we leave. Call (908) 923-3159 and we’ll give you a straight answer on whether this is a job for your Saturday or for our truck.
