Famco Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Damper Repair: The Elizabeth Owner’s Guide

Famco damper repair in Elizabeth typically runs $280-$520 installed, depending on whether the throat plate, frame, or full assembly needs replacement. We stock Famco-compatible parts on our trucks and can complete most swaps in a single visit. Most Elizabeth homeowners discover the problem on the first cold night in November, when the damper won’t open fully or drops shut halfway through a fire.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco has produced several damper series over the decades, and the part you need depends on the casting marks and throat dimensions. The most common in Elizabeth homes are the Famco cast-iron throat dampers from the 1980s and 1990s, typically marked with a raised “FAMCO” on the frame and a part number starting with TD or FD. Measure the throat opening carefully: a 36-inch fireplace usually takes a 32-inch damper plate, but Famco’s older castings run slightly undersized compared to modern replacements. That’s the compatibility gotcha we’ve learned the hard way. If the original frame is cracked or the pivot pins are seized, you’ll need the full assembly, not just the plate.

We carry both OEM Famco parts and quality equivalents from Gelco and Copperfield. For most Elizabeth homes with standard masonry fireplaces, the aftermarket equivalent matches the original spec and carries the same ten-year warranty. For historic homes near Westminster or the older stock along Morris Avenue where the original frame is embedded in the masonry, we prefer OEM to ensure the pivot geometry lines up without grinding. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Famco.

Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

  • The handle spins but the plate doesn’t move. The linkage between the rotary control and the damper plate has corroded or snapped. In Elizabeth’s humid summers and freeze-thaw winters, that steel rod rusts through in 15-20 years if the chimney cap leaks.
  • The plate drops shut while the fire is burning. The pivot pins are worn oval or the counterweight spring has lost tension. Famco’s older cast-iron springs fatigue faster than stainless replacements, especially if the fireplace is used as a primary heat source.
  • You feel cold air falling even when the damper is “closed.” The plate is warped or the frame seat has corroded. A 1/8-inch gap around a 32-inch plate is the equivalent of a 4-inch hole in your wall, which you’ll notice on Elizabeth’s January nights.
  • The handle is stuck solid and won’t budge. Creosote has glued the plate to the frame, or the pivot pins have rust-welded themselves. This usually follows years of skipped sweeps.
  • There’s a rattling or clanking when you operate it. A pivot pin has backed out or the plate has cracked. Continuing to force it will drop the plate into the firebox, which is when the repair gets expensive.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
Famco damper plate only (aftermarket) $280-$360
Famco full assembly with frame (OEM) $420-$520
Additional masonry repair to frame seat $180-$340

The range depends on three things: whether we can reuse the existing frame, whether the firebrick needs trimming to fit a modern replacement, and whether the chimney needs a Level-2 camera inspection to rule out hidden damage. Our estimate is the number on the invoice. The 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation in writing, no arguing. We document the before condition with photos you can see, and we explain the verdict in plain English before any work starts.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground and a hard stop. You can safely check whether the handle linkage is disconnected by looking up from the firebox with a flashlight, and you can measure the throat opening to tell us what part to bring. But installing a damper plate requires working at height inside the chimney throat, often with your arms above your head on a ladder, manipulating a 12-pound cast-iron plate over an open flue. The pivot pins are under spring tension, and a slipped wrench can send the plate down the flue or onto the firebrick below. We’ve retrieved more than one homeowner’s dropped plate from the smoke shelf. For the swap itself, call us. We’ll be there when we say, and most jobs finish in a single visit.
