Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Rust staining on the chimney breast or roof shingles below the cap. HeatShield caps use 304 or 316 stainless mesh and lid, but the base rail and corner screws are often galvanized on older units. Once the galvanizing fails in Elizabeth’s freeze-thaw cycles, the rust runs down and stains masonry that was clean twenty years ago.
• Mesh sides pulled away from the frame or clogged solid with creosote flakes. The spark arrestor mesh on HeatShield caps is 5/8-inch weave, which catches debris but can sag if the cap has been brushed against during cleaning or if a heavy limb struck it during one of Elizabeth’s summer storms.

An owner can safely check whether the cap is present, whether it’s sitting level, and whether the mesh is intact from ground level with binoculars. Do not climb the roof to tug on it.
